Our Review of the InSTEP Safari Swivel Single jogging stroller

The InSTEP Safari Swivel Single Jogger is a walking stroller capable of handling any terrain at an even pace. The Safari features a 12" front swivel wheel and 16" rear wheels, and so is best for parents anticipating light fitness walking and everyday pushing. The sturdy steel frame, while heavier than aluminum framed strollers, is super durable.

Standout Features:

  • Sturdy steel frame
  • Mesh bug screen to keep pests away
  • 12" front swivel wheel locks forward for added control
  • Molded parent and child trays each with 2 cup holders
  • Dual trigger folding mechanism for added safety

Benefits for You: At this price, what's not to love? A 12" front swivel wheel and 16" rear wheels corner with ease and effortlessly tackle rough terrain on country walks. The front wheel locks forward for added control. For parents going from city to park in the car, the Safari folds compactly and fits easily in the trunk.

Carry all the trappings of parenting with you in the roomy underseat basket, and carry everything you need immediately (cell phone, water, snack) in the parent tray with dual cup holders. The rubberized handle ensures the driver's comfort and the non-slip grip makes for smooth and steady pushing.

Compatibility: The Safari Swivel Single Jogger is infant car seat compatible. To attach one of the following infant car seats, simply rest the car seat on the child tray and secure it to the stroller using the included straps. Compatible with the following infant car seats, sold separately:

  • Graco SnugRide
  • Graco SnugRide 32
  • Chicco Key Fit
  • Chicco Key Fit 30
  • Maxi-Cosi Mico
  • Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30
  • Combi Shuttle
  • Evenflo car seats
  • Compass Light & Portable Infant Car Seat
  • Britax Companion
  • Baby Trend Latch-Loc & Flex-Loc
  • Combi Centre Series
  • Combi Connection

Benefits for Baby: Babies love going outside with their parents, and they love a walk even more when they're sitting comfortably on the removable padded seat and grabbing their favorite snack from the pivoting molded child tray, which includes two cup holders. In addition to the padded seat, children rest comfortably on the reclining seat.

Children are shaded from the sun with the retractable sun canopy. The 5-point safety harness keeps your passenger snug and secure while riding around in the Safari Swivel Single Jogger. A bug screen keeps Joe Junior happy no matter the August mosquito population.

Comparison: The Safari Swivel Single is a great option for parents looking for taking long, country walks with baby. For rougher terrains, try the InSTEP Grand Safari Swivel Single Jogger. Its exposed spring suspension system ensures a smoother ride for your precious passenger.

For a swivel wheel stroller with jogging capabilities, check out the BOB Revolution. The Revolution is a lighter weight, all-terrain stroller that features adjustable tracking and a suspension system for a smooth, controlled ride. With the addition of a car seat adapter, the Revolution is car seat compatible. However, it has a much higher price tag.

Wife loves this stroller

Bought for my wife who has been wanting one. Could not decide between this and the Suburban Safari. Bought this for better use over sand, and stuff. Great stroller and yes the front wheel DOES LOCK. Great price and was super fast shipping!!

And yes, the cupholders are small but not a problem as she has her bottle hang.

Great Stoller for the Price

After spending what seemed like weeks looking for a good, reasonably priced jogging stroller, I decided to purchase the Instep Safari. I couldn't be more pleased! Putting it together was a breeze. I was worried that the stroller would be large when folded, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it fit in the back of our Jeep Patriot quite nicely. The back wheels come off in a matter of seconds, making it even more compact. It takes up less space than our Graco travel system. I LOVED that the stroller comes with a car seat adapter. My husband and I have taken it for a walk/light jog on our local trail a few times. It was great to be able to see my 6 month old while we walked. When the swivel wheel is locked, it works very well as a light jogging stroller. The swivel wheel is great to use at the store and around the neighborhood. The understorage basket is very generous in size. I love that the handle bar is adjustable. My husband and I are both tall, so it made the stroller even more comfortable to handle. Cons: The parking brake sticks and can be difficult to use. Folding the stroller is a little awkward. It definitely takes two hands to fold and open. This are rather minor things for a multifunctional stroller at such a reasonable price. I was able to purchase several accessories and the stroler for less than many other models.

Love It!

We bought ours 3 1/2 years ago for our second child and are cleaning it up to use for our third. It is fantastic--really lives up to its reputation. We even took it to Italy and Germany with us and it made the trek through airplanes, airports, Florence and many other cities in Tuscany very well. It was a little big for Venice, though. One quirk is that it sometimes starts shaking even if I am walking slowly--it seems an alignment is off. But everytime I take it to the bike shop for them to take a look it doesn't do it anymore! Go figure. We highly recommend it. It is rugged, super easy to turn, spacious and a pleasure to "drive". It's a bit heavy getting it in and out of the car and there is a possibility of tipping over if the child leans too far out the side. Always insist the child not lean out. That's why I give it a 4 star. However, we love it!

Great stroller!!

I'm married to a wonderful man who researches everything before we get it. I've grown to appreciate this because we always end up getting wonderful products. We were in the market to buy a jogging stroller. He picked this one for us. We don't run daily.... we run just a couple times a week. So, we didn't want to spend a ton of money on a stroller. I was just looking for something that was sturdy, reclined flat, and had a front wheel that would lock and unlock. The InSTEP Safari Stroller matched everything that we wanted. It was a great purchase! We definitely recommend it. It is also easy to collapse, lock in place, or lift into the back of my SUV. Rolls very smoothly too. My son falls asleep in it every time we use it - so it must be comfortable for him. There is one thing that I don't love about it... but it was fixable... the straps that go by the child's neck/shoulders aren't padded. We added car seat pads ($5) to the straps and that helps. Overall though, it's a great stroller!

A Breeze!

My 36" almost 2-year-old fits well and has room to grow. I jog with this nearly everyday on the sidewalk, and I keep it in swivel mode. It works great, but they do advise you to fix the wheel for jogs. My 6-month-old fits great, too! We just could not figure out how to tighten the straps very well. Perhaps they are just made for bigger kids on our model. We have the 2006 model and I WISH I had the carseat adaptor, bug screen and extras goodies from the 2008 model. This is the only single jogger you'll ever need (unless you are a SERIOUS runner who goes fast, over long distances and on uneven terrain). As joggers, my husband and I love this one. He is 6'4" and the handlebar adjust for him perfectly. The only suggestion is to buy an extra sunshade because, like most joggers, this one won't block the sun unless it's right overhead. At this price, though, you can do that. Save your money for a high-end double jogger when you have your second kid, and go with this single stroller.

Great Stroller

I actually bought this stroller for jogging. I'm 5 ft tall and 105lbs, so I had a hard time pushing a fixed wheel stroller with a non-adjustable handle bar. This stroller has been very manageable for me, and I haven't had any issues with stability. It is also fairly light weight, which helps when you have to put it in the car. I no longer dread my "stroller runs." My kids find it very comfortable as well. Good buy, great stroller!

Wonderful Stroller for the Price

Reviewer: Anonymous , Santa Monica, CA Date: March 14, 2007
This is just a great stroller all told. I jog with it 3 times a week or so, and the swivel wheel when locked in place works just like a regular jogging stroller. Further, the 12 in front wheel, which some people seem concerned about compared to the larger wheels on conventional jogging strollers, certainly has given me no problems, but then I'm no sprinter, and I don't run offroad. When I have taken it on fireroads, say, it's performed fine. Ride is great. Adjustable handle bar is great. Five point harness works fine. Storage seems sufficient to me (we shop with this stoller often). Padding on the seat is thin but sufficient. The seat recline mechanism is both really cheap and works quite well. The boy loves riding in the stroller, falls asleep easily, never complains. The swivel wheel is marvelous for walking around the neigborhood or negotiating the supermarket (now having used a swivel, I would now never do without it). One reviewer mentioned they never use it in swivel mode because it wobbles. This is most likely because some of the strollers shipped with the front swivel bearing loose. I had the same wobble problem. InStep was very quick to send me a replacement part, but when I went to install it I discovered it was just a matter of tightening the bolt a bit. No problem since. The stroller is easy to put together, and folds fairly easily. It is rather large so my wife doesn't like traveling with it in the car. However, it's no bigger than any other jogging stroller. We use it as our daily walking stoller as well as a jogging stroller even though we have a couple of Maclarens around here somewhere - it's just the easiest to drive and most comfortable for the boy. This is exactly what you hope for in a low cost product - that it will be so well designed that it can be affordable and also quite good. We've had it for a year and it shows no sign of fatigue. It actually also looks cool, to my eye. The only difference between this and some of the fancier models is that the wheels have many thin spokes, like a bicycle, instead of five thicker spokes (like a contemporary sport motorcycle). Highly recommended.
