Our Review of the Phil and Teds SP Single stroller

Direct from New Zealand comes Phil and Teds signature stroller, the Phil and Teds SP (which is short for "SPort"). The SP set the standard for Phil and Teds strollers with smooth swivel wheel design, the versatility of a reclining Second Seat, sporty styling, and an adjustable height handle.

With the right Phil and Teds accessories, the SP Stroller has four possible modes:

  • Single infant
  • Single toddler,
  • Baby and toddler
  • Two toddler mode

The unique Phil and Teds SP is a single stroller that is ideal for parents that are planning to have a second child. Since an estimated 75% of all parents will have a second child within a few years of their first, you can understand why this stroller is so popular. With the SP Doubles Kit the SP Stroller converts from a single seater to a two passenger tandem stroller, allowing your baby and toddler to ride together. With the Phil and Teds Car Seat Adapter, your newborn can ride up front in the safety of their carseat.

Because the SP is so narrow and (thanks to the swivel wheel) maneuverable compared to most side-by-side double strollers, you'll have a degree of freedom few other strollers provide. The underside basket has room for extra goods, but must double as a footrest when the Doubles Kit is attached. If you need extra storage, Phil and Teds sells special matching Pannier Bags that hang on the sides of the SP Stroller.

Kids big or small will ride in absolute comfort and safety in the Phil and Teds SP. Both seats are well padded, and main seat reclines flat for when they get sleepy. The Doubles Kit seat reclines, too, ensuring that each passenger rides comfortably.

Bottom Line: Even though it is called the SPort, the Phil and Teds SP is not intended for jogging. You can lock the front wheel forward for added control on rough terrain, but jogging with this stroller is not recommended. Beyond that limitation, we cannot recommend this stroller enough, especially if you plan to have a second child.

The SP is as useful as it is eye-catching. Sleek, useful, and easy to push, the Phil and Teds SP is a relatively light and easy to manage (sub)urban stroller that grows along with your family. For a simplified and thriftier version of the SP, consider the Phil and Teds Classic stroller. While the Classic lacks the adjustable handlebar and reclining second seat of the SP, the low price-tag is hugely attractive.

The Phil and Teds SPort stroller has many features:

It has it's place

This is my third stroller. My other two are the BOB ironman (single) and the Peg Perego P3. I bought this stroller and the second seat last year (2007)when my second child was born. The reason for choosing this over a double BOB was it's small "footprint" and ability to seat two. That said, I do not feel it's high price is justified by it's engineering. If you want a well made stroller buy a BOB. If you want a stroller that you can take to the mall with two small children buy this. Neither of my children liked the baby-toddler mode. This year they take turns sitting in the front and back as neither really enjoys the back seat (visibility is limited.) My older daugther walks more now so usually she gets the back seat when she is tired (I have never had any tipping problems-but she is also very light). The handlebar bag is kinda hokey and dangles too low, all beverages must be tightly capped. The brake is hard to put on. The handlebars could do with a telescoping feature (In toddler-toddler mode you have to hunch over a bit to reach the handle bars). The sunvisor is very skimpy and offers very limited protection (really the BOB spoiled me). A removable plastic snack tray would be a nice touch and easy for the company to add on or sell as an accessory. This stroller is not perfect but with a few changes could be. What I love is the small size, short turning radius and the narrow profile. Easy to push and turn with one hand, the stroller rolls well. I give it 4 stars because it keeps us all mobile and in one neat package.

Functional, Yet Hard To Steer

2
Reviewer: Tim , Carsonville, MI Date: April 21, 2008
Purchased New P&T Sport in April 2007. A word to the wise: TEST DRIVE BEFORE YOU BUY. If you're okay with the steering, it'll be a good stroller for you. PROS: 1) Compact double, with narrow profile of single stoller 2) Adjustable handlebar 3) Lay flat feature nice for infant 4) Easy to collapse 5) Very versatile & functional CONS: 1) Wheels need to be bigger for a smoother ride 2) Tires lose air pressure over time 3) Fabric seam pulled apart in two different places within the first MONTH of use. Found out at month eleven that neither fabric, nor easily torn foam handlebar cover are covered under one year warranty 4) VERY HARD TO MANEUVER. Front wheel hangs up when changing direction abruputly. VERY frustrating. Mutiple emails to Phil&Teds customer service not returned. Tried greasing the pin/sheave (should be a roller bearing like some other strollers), tried overinflating front tire, neither helped. The stroller works fine, it's just a fight to steer it. I can effortlessly drive my brother's BOB Revolution around with one hand, while our Sport requires two hands and WAAAAAY more effort. I've seen this in other reviews as well, so I think it's a design flaw, not a stroller specific issue.

A few low points

I bought this stroller for my 3 year old girl and 2 month old baby boy thinking it would be the perfect solution, but it wasn't. Although overall this is a good stroller there are a number of things that are not functional: the front seat (i.e. the regular single stroller seat) is small and if you have a tall toddler you cannot use the sunshade and it's not very comfortable (my 3 year old is 40inch tall). The reclining mechanism is very poorly designed - it's impossible to lift the seat up with the child actually in the seat. Which makes it difficult when your baby has just woken up from a nap and wants to sit up: you have to take the child out of the stroller and you still need 2 hands to clip the clips in (there's really no way you can lift the seat up while you are holding your baby). Many other strollers have a much more functional system where you just pull a line and the seat comes up/down. The foot break is very hard to manouvre, I still need to bend down and lock it/unlock it by hand. The back seat doesn't recline much and I still haven't been able to use it with my 5 month old baby as it's too upright. When I placed my 3 year old in the front doubles seat and my baby in the fully reclined position in the main seat, the baby had very little room above him. So I have only been able to use the stroller as a single stroller, which to me defeats the purpose. I think the concept of this stroller is great, but it needs to be perfected.

A great investment

I do love this stroller. I have a 2 year-old and a 6-week old, and the thing I like best is all of the different configurations. Sometimes I only have my 6-week old with me and I really like the versatility, I can just pop the car seat in and go, no need to swap strollers in my car etc... The Doubles-kit is semi easy to change on the go. My 6-week old loves to lie flat and she really hates to be confined in anything so she loves it and rocks off to sleep everytime! The canopy when the doubles kit sits in front is a little short for my daughter who is tall for her age (34"). Hopefully she will fit long enough for my newborn to move to the rear seat. A couple of things I dont like: 1. No canopy on the rear seat for sun protection. 2. Instructions are not easy to follow - photos are too small and dark in the literature. 3. Harnesses on the stroller itself plus the doubles kit are not great and are basically useless for a newborn. 4. For a $500 stroller you would think they could include its own tyre pump. 5. Brake works but is hard to get to and difficult to use in flip flops. Overall I love this stroller and I only wanted to buy one, and this works for us. Mine is apple green in color - and we get a lot of comments everywhere we go. People always ask where my newborn is, as she is hidden underneath! If living in a very cold climate I am not sure how it would go, as you really cant 'seal' the newborn underneath in. Perhaps this is where you would need the cocoon. I think this stroller will see us through, especially as we would like to have a 3rd baby in the next couple of years.

Great Stroller

Reviewer: Anonymous , New York, NY Date: September 12, 2007
We live in NYC and this stroller saved us. It's imperfect in some ways ... the canopy is too low and tiny; our baby didn't like like lying flat and it's really hard to get him in; the brakes are hard to work; and, there's not so much storage. That said and all this aside, it rides great and offers, I think, incomparable double strolling.

The Best for doubles

5
Reviewer: Kate , Geneva, IL Date: September 11, 2007
I love this stroller! I have been through a lot of strollers (4 doubles and 6 singles). It's light weight, folds easily, and maneuvers well. If I had to find something to complain about, I'd say I don't love the break. It works fine, but it's hard to put in place when I'm wearing flip flops. Otherwise, everything is wonderful about this stroller. I've always done a lot of walking and when I just had one baby, that was easy enough with most strollers, but with my twins, I have really felt like I lost a lot of mobility and freedom. All the double strollers were too long or too wide or too heavy. This stroller isn't any of those things. I feel like I'm back to pushing a singles stroller, but with the pleasure of having both of my babies with me. This stroller pushes great with one hand and is short enough in length that it is actually possible to open a shop door and push the stroller in without needing someone to run over and help me. This is the first double setup where I have found that to be true. I also have found it works well with one of the babies on the bottom and my four year old on top. I have a City Jogger doubles (side by side) and it's really hard to push if the weight differences are significant. I also love that if I go somewhere with just one child, then I can set it up as just a single. Before my Phil and Ted's, I kept my City Jogger double and an umbrella in my trunk. This took up alot of room. Also, when folded, the Phil and Ted's doesn't take up much more space than my double umbrella stroller. It really is a wonderful stroller.

2 IS Better Than 1...

Reviewer: Suzanne , Cincinnati, Ohio Date: September 04, 2007
It really is easy to go on walks or shop with two children under the age of 2 with this stroller. My sister has the Valco Runabout Twin stroller which I really like using because I was surprised that it is REALLY easy to push and maneuver for being wide, even if the storage area is hard to get to and the visors are flimsy. I had thought I was going to purchase one also, but then I came across this stroller! The overall weight of the stroller is less than the Valco, which is important for me with all of the lifting in and out of the car, and the compact fold fits in the back of my wagon. I really like that it is not a side-by-side (without feeling like I am pushing a bus). My son who is 2 thinks it is fun to sit "on top of" his little sister. My sister's kids who are 2 and 4 do a lot of fighting when one of them gets over on "their" part of the stroller in the side-by-side Valco. I REALLY like all of the configurations with this stroller. My 9 week old can lay flat while my son sits above her. Eventually, she will sit beneath him as we did purchase the 2nd seat. When my son wants to walk I put my daughter's car seat in the stroller for yet another configuration. The shocks are great on this stroller and it is very EASY to maneuver, go over bumps, curbs, go through doorways, etc. Like with many strollers, the canopy never shades enough of the child (but it is not flimsy). This is a common stroller problem and it shouldn't be the determining factor for a purchase. I do miss the cup holders that my other stroller has, but I have learned to down-size and either put the item under the stroller or carry it in my bag. I feel this is a well-designed, solid stroller that is safe for my two children. I am really pleased with our purchase!

Very hard to maneuver

1
Reviewer: Anonymous , New York, NY Date: August 29, 2007
We got this stroller to replace our mountain buggy when our second child was born. The concept of this stroller (how it holds two) looked great, and the frame looked very similar to the Mountain Buggy so I thought it would be similar to handle. It's NOT. This stroller is so much more difficult to maneuver -- there's no way I could do it with one hand and even with two it's a bit of a struggle. Maybe there's something wrong with ours, but it always resists turning the direction we want to turn, and it's hard to keep rolling in a straight line. It's like driving a shopping cart with a bad wheel. It's also a lot heavier than the mountain buggy (even without the second seat), so maybe that's why it's harder to handle. We have also had the problems mentioned by another reviewer about the bar hitting a toddler's head in recline. I was really excited about getting this stroller but we have been very disappointed.

I've lost all my baby weight....

Reviewer: Anonymous , Los Angeles, CA Date: August 22, 2007
... from using this stroller!! It is, by far, my favorite stroller of my collection of 7. I should have gotten this one from the beginning. It makes me want to walk/run/jog all the time! (even though they say it's not a "true" jogging stroller). The attachment in the back is perfect for my 2nd child - although my older one loves to ride in the back too because he thinks he's "hiding". When I just take one child out around town, I just pop the double attachment off and it's instantly a single stroller. When I take the 2 of them out, I pop the attachment on and let them fight over who gets to sit in the back! People are always shocked that there's another child back there! I get asked all the time where I got this stroller and I live in a very chic part of Los Angeles! PROS: Maneuverable, adjustable handlebar, easy to fold, good-sized basket, looks cool, a great 2-toddler stroller because it fits into any doorway, aisle, hallway - just like a single stroller would. But it doesn't have the heaviness and hard-to-steer qualities as a true tandem stroller (Graco) and it's not as bulky or non-maneuverable as a side-by-side stroller (like my Maclaren Techno). I also like the handstrap for when I'm going downhill and I'm afraid the stroller may veer out of my grasp. I don't mind the 5-seat harness - it makes me feel like my children are safely buckled in. I like the fabric too - it's tough and durable and easy to clean. CONS: I wish the canopy was a little longer, I wish the back seat was a bit more cushy for when my 9-month old falls asleep back there (his head always flops around). My hubby wishes the handles were a little taller (he's 6 feet tall) and that there was a drink holder and a handbrake. Also when the main seat is reclined all the way and we put the double-seat attachment in the FRONT, there is very little room for the child who is lying in the reclined main seat. So if he wakes up, he literally is almost crushed by the top seat. But I've taken both kids hiking in the canyons in this stroller and it was extremely convenient when the older child fell asleep and we just let him recline all the way while the baby was in the front seat! It is the perfect stroller for traveling through airports, bringing to the beach, to the mall, hiking, everywhere! I get scared though when I bring it to places like Disneyland or SeaWorld because I think someone will steal it. An amazingly VERSATILE stroller. I absolutely love it and can't imagine ever getting another one. I still gave it 5 stars despite some of the Cons that I listed because, in my opinion, the cons pale compared to the numerous pros of this stroller. Even my husband likes taking the kids on long walks in this stroller. We've walked everywhere in this stroller!! I highly recommend it to anyone - even if you're just having your first child. You can always buy the doubles attachment later if you have a 2nd child. Even if you never have a 2nd child, it's a great single stroller.
