Suuntot6 Great..sometimes

Reviewer: fred pfeifer , Arlington Heights, IL Date: July 24, 2006
When it's working it's heaven, but to get it to work -record your heart rate and speed, miles and oxygen consumed - requires jumping through a number of hoops to make it work right. If you do use your watch to measure your heart and log your workout you must closely follow the written directions and do exactly as it says. Otherwise, you'll go on your run, thinking the watch is recording your progress, only to get back and find out that somehow you pushed the wrong button or the wrong sequence and nothing got recorded. BUT, when the watch works it is a thing of beauty. I also own the heart monitor strap, the foot pod and the bike pod. The bike pod seems problematic as it only occassionaly picks up my speed and time - but.. the fault may lie in the way I set it up. I am still working on a solution.

Fantastic perfromance

Reviewer: Mark Williamson , CA Date: July 24, 2006
The t6 does everything it says it will do. It is easy to read and fairly intuitive to use. The barometer/altimeter is as accurate as any other I have used, while the HRM/training mode works great with no interference from outside sources. The bike pod is as accurate as my Cat Eye cycle computer. To tie it all together, the software from First Beat Technology is very helpful in examining the effectiveness of workouts and determining area that need improvement. In addition the watch is rugged and I get compliments all of the time about it. I would buy another one in an instant.

t6

I'm currently on my third watch and waiting for my second bike pod. The first watch didn't work at all, the second one has been intermittent and the third one so far hasn't worked (but i haven't spent much time making sure i'm doing everything right). Tech support and/or customer service has been very nice but doesn't get it right (that's why i'm getting my fourth watch and not my second bike pod). Once i get my replacement bike pod i can have a better opinion on the pod accessory. That being said, if everything would work as it's supposed to, i like what i get.

Great Watch

Reviewer: Sean Lloyd , Orem, UT Date: July 23, 2006
I have owned the t6 for a little over a year now, and I love this watch. I bought it last year to help me improve my marathon time. With the watch I was able to track everything that I needed to train better. I love the heart rate alerts, they helped me keep in optimal training range as much as possible. It was like having a coach running with me. I also liked how I could use my HR monitor and footpod at the same time. The only downside is that using both of these accessories wore my battery out in less than a year. Overall best watch I've ever owned. And I took 15 minutes off my marathon time!

Suunto T6

Reviewer: Anonymous , Oakland, CA Date: July 21, 2006
I really love the T6 and would have given it a 5 stars if it displayed: heart rate, rate of climb, mph at one time. I like that I can download the information from my HR to my computer and look at my workout over a period of time.

T6 Review

3
Reviewer: Dan Klein , streamwood, IL Date: July 21, 2006
Overall, I think the watch and hrm work fine. The speed/distance foot pod is erratic. It turns itself off on almost every run (even with a new battery). Also, even though the manual says it will keep track of different workouts in the logbook, workouts on different days are lumped together.

Comments: From my experience, you can in fact separate these, so there may be some sort of user error.

Great product - lots of features

Reviewer: Marshall , DC Date: July 21, 2006
This is a great watch -- it does take time and focus to learn how to use all the feature set. If you are serious about training but you need some motivation to help you plot your progress through many different factors - this is the system for you.

3 stars but i love my T6

Reviewer: Chris Van Oosterhout , New York, NY Date: July 21, 2006
why do i love my T6? because when i'm pushing myself past 90% and my eyes start to roll back and flutter and my mouth hangs slack with tongue falling out i can look at my T6 and identify, clearly, my heart rate, elapsed time, distance and speed. all because the layout is bloody simple and the shape of the numbers/letters on the display, though may look silly at first glance, are easier than any other brand (i've used) to read when i'm about ready to puke or blackout... or puke and blackout.. whichever. i love the simple and intuitive menu system and back light. what i hate. what i hate! and why it gets three stars, is that it drops the signal from the HR strap without rhyme or reason... and it always happens at the worst time. "huff puff huff puff HR at 172bpm... what the... now it 80... now it 113... now there's no signal... apply more spit... still no signal... adjust strap... still no signal. reconnect to watch... oh sh** i still have 1 more hour to run and there's no signal in sight." that pretty much sums up my love for my T6. of course there are so many more wonderful functions the watch can perform and i can download it to my laptop! but the dropped signal makes my heart sink especially in a race... so i've taken 2 stars away for payback.

The Suunto t6 - High Tech Training Made Easy

5
Reviewer: Mikael Hanson , New York, NY Date: July 21, 2006
After many years of coaching, I still am amazed at the number of athletes who train without knowing anything about their heart rate (HR), resting or while being active. While not a perfect measure of ones training intensity, the heart rate is a truly revealing number. Once understood, oneâ??s heart rate can be used to not only guide you toward creating more focused workouts, but also inform you when youâ??ve perhaps done too much (a fate all too common for the A-type personality of your average triathlete).

Ask my wife and she will tell you I have the slightly annoying habit of checking my own heart rate many times at day. The first measure is when I first wake up (and I can tell you those numbers going back nearly 20 years). The second measure is while I am training, irregardless of the workoutâ??s intensity. This is where heart rate measurement becomes even more important is as a tool. Now a devoted spinning student, even my wife can tell me her five heart rate training zones â?? but the trick is what to do with this information once you have it. Meet the Suunto t6 (www.suunto.com/t6), a â??wristopâ?? training manager in every sense of the word.

On a recent trip to New Yorkâ??s Tourneau Time machine (ironically to replace my third Nike sports watch in as many years), I discovered a corner of the store dedicated to a line of multi-function specialty watches I had never heard of (that from a self-proclaimed watch-geek). Suunto (pronounced Soon-toe as far as I know) offers one of the most comprehensive selection of watches for almost every sporting need. From diving watches to sailing watches, and even watches for golfers (the Suunto G6 enables the golfer to check tempo, rhythm, backswing length and club head speed).

For us endurance athletes, there is the Suunto t6, the next generation of heart rate monitors (HRM). In simple terms, a heart rate monitorâ??s usefulness is measured by how easy it is to navigate the various functions. What good is it, if you canâ??t remember how to set the training zones or even access the data collected on your last training run?

For a guy who canâ??t even remember how to empty the memory of his Polar 720 HRM, I found using the Suunto t6 a breeze after a quick scan of the ownerâ??s manual. The Suunto t6 has three basic screen settings â?? Time / Altimeter / Training. It is from these three basic starting points, that things get very interesting indeed.

The Suunto t6 unit can even be paired with a wireless speed sensor (for the bike) as well as a foot pod to calculate running distance and pace. But that is not what makes the Suunto t6 unique. What separates the Suunto t6 from the rest of the pack is the training manager that comes with it. Plug your Suunto t6 into your computer and now you have a desk top coach to help you analyze the data from not only your individual workout, but from your history of workouts. Once you load your personal data (age, height, weight, resting HR, max HR, level of activity, etc), the training manager takes over from there. The Suunto t6 comes with a Training Guidebook, which goes well beyond just teaching one how to use the computer training manager, as it provides a great lesson in sound training philosophies and goes to great lengths to describe the various performance measures in simple enough terms (such as heart rate reserve, respiratory and ventilation rates, oxygen consumption, etc).

At an MSRP of $499 (closer to $449 at many retailers I looked up), the Suunto t6 is a tad more expensive than some of the comparable units from Polar (625, 720, 725, 810) or Nike (Triax Elite). However, having used nearly all of those â??otherâ?? units, the Suunto is certainly more stylish in appearance than the Polar series (I used to always keep my Polar off my wrist and on the bike), and in my opinion far easier to navigate for not only the watch functions, but also those found in the â??Training Managerâ??. No wonder it was voted Best Fitness Gear of 2004 by Men's Health magazine.
