Good Design

Reviewer: Don Schomburg , Greenville,NC Date: November 21, 2007
The watch design was good and I enjoy how stylish it is. But the user software and the clutter of all the PODS are a draw back. Also for an everyday watch it should at least have a crystal face plate. Another draw back is that the software is not MAC friendly which I was upset about when I got it. But it was too difficult to navigate and I decided to go with the Gramin forerunner and am very happy that.

Like the technology, but there are a couple of faults with the watch: 1. the display for some of the numbers (log/TE) are far to small. Reading in dim light while your running is nearly impossible. 2. the backlight...WHAT BACKLIGHT? 3. the face scratches even if you blow on it...this is really annoying. btw, toothpaste will remove the surface scratches nicely.

Ambivalent

Watch is good. But I too encountered two very annoying problems: the wrist band loses its grip every several minutes - I almost lost it several times during training. And, the HR strap broke at several places after just two weeks of use. Not good enough for such a pricey watch. And to top it all, I'm waiting for service for two weeks now.

Sorry you're having trouble with Suunto's customer service. Suunto will definitely get back to you - if they haven't already. SuuntoWatches.com is a retailer (not the manufacturer) and we cannot handle warranty or service issues for Suunto. (Call Suunto USA at 800-543-9124) What happened with your HR belt is highly unusual. The fabric t-Series wrist straps do unfortunately loosen sometimes (I use a t3 with fabric strap and occasionally experience this). A non-fabric t-Series replacement strap will solve the problem, or you can run a stich across your fabric band to secure it permanently after adjusting for ideal fit.

Great heart rate monitor, but for the price you should get a crystal face.

AWESOME !!!

AWESOME WATCH!!! ...It completely overshot my expectations!! ... very comfortable, intuitive operation, and great functions!!! My only suggestion is to be able to personalize data displayed on main screens, 4 example: Seeing HBR, Stopwatch, Total Distance & Training Effect SIMULTANEOUSLY on the Speed/Distance screen; other than that, almost PERFECT !!!

Best training watch yet

Reviewer: Jack , Kansas City, Missouri Date: February 10, 2007
I have owned over 6 heart rate monitor watches and this is the best by far. It is does sooo much and this is the reason that some may find it a bit complicated. However, I find the buttons, functions and use much more intuitive than any Polar watch I have ever used. The software lite works well. I like the coach feature too since it gives me a heads up on what I should be doing for the next five days. I find that using this watch motivates me to work a little harder and more often and thus it is helping me improve my endurance. At age 64, I wish I had this device 30 years ago. I am using it about 5 days a week and find that all the functions work. I have had a few glitches because I didn't understand some areas but by keeping at it and going to the website and reading the F&A, I got this marvelous invention figured out. Good work Suunto

Getting back into running

4
Reviewer: Anonymous , Chicago, IL Date: January 08, 2007
I got the t4 as an early xmas present to myself. I've been away from running for about 5 years, although not entirely away. I'd do about a month of running and then take a few months off. I had trouble staying motivated and I also may have just been burning myself out doing long runs too frequently when I started back up.
When I saw the t4 featured in Men's Health I figured that the "coach" feature would keep me on track. I used to log all of my workouts in notebooks, but that was easy to toss aside. Wearing this watch serves as a constant reminder on when I should be working out and for how long. I do like the coach function, even if the workouts that it recommends don't seem to be as hard as I know I can go. (I almost always work myself harder than the coach recommends.)
My biggest problem with this watch is that the face is not crystal. I can blame myself for not getting a face protector, but I just don't want to add anymore bulk to my watch. I scratched the plastic within a week when I took it off and placed it face down on my dresser. Since then I've added a few various scratches from who knows what.

My only other complaint is that it still seems to be recommending easier workouts, but maybe the watch is right and I'm wrong (and maybe that's why I've gotten burned out in the past).

I really do like this watch and would recommend it to any runner. I can't wait to get the foot POD too so that I can really get nerdy with this thing.

Comments from The Staff:

Thanks, great feedback. The t6 has a crystal face. I agree, much more durable and scratch resistant. It would add cost as well though. I'm sure Suunto Finland will see this and add to the list of things to consider.

Thanks!

Suunto t4 So-So?

2
Reviewer: Anonymous , Arizona Date: January 05, 2007
I love Suunto watches but am not happy with this one due to the braclet quality & it sliding when running. Also the blacklight works 20% of the time. Works when alarm goes off only.

Good Watch Couple of Improvements would make it ideal

Reviewer: Anonymous , Newport Beach, CA Date: December 13, 2006
I just got my t4 and ran to the gym to see how it works. The early review is that it works pretty well. As advertised it tracks your heart rate and has a nice training effect feature which is very helpful during your workouts. I am eager to try the coaching feature in the next week or so when there is enough data in the watch to use it effectively. The Bad: -The band is bad, the company should just replace it with a better band
-The watch will NOT connect to a PC without the PC POD this was not evident to me when I bought it the advertisement even mentiones "PC Interface" the pod is approx $100 and will allow you to use the training software on your pc which looks vbery nice from what I have seen.
-The log book that is held in the watch is not editable which is poor when you are just learning the watch like I was and collected about 10 minutes of me walking around my house as opposed to me working out. I cannot remove this to my knowledge which is frustrating especially when I am hoping the "Coach" will use the data in the log book to help me in the future. (which is now tainted with my 60 bbm heart rate).
-General note to the industry (not just this watch) figure out how to make heart rate monitors work without the chest strap. Two electrodes on the chest with a removable transmitter or something. I finally got used to the chest strap but it is a little annoying at first.
Other than that I would give it high marks at this point.
Overall I give this watch high marks and Suunto credit for being one of the first companies to take the science of working out and get it into a watch.
There was also one feature enhancement request I had which is not a fair ding on the watch since I do not think it was designed for this. I would like to be able to differentiate my 2 hour workouts into "running" and "weights". I do both and the data becomes mixed in the current log book. It would be nice to be able to really tell my total workout effectivness (from a heart rate/caloric burn standpoint) and my fitness from a running standpoint.
Finally a note to the suuntowatches.com staff. As a consumer it seems unprofessional for you to attack your reviewers as you seem to have in the previous posts. Many (perhaps myself included) may not be as educated with the product as you are but that does not make our opinions poor. It may mean you need to make some adjustments in your instruction manuals or quick start guides.

Comments from The Staff:

Thanks for the review, not trying to attack anyone, only point out human error or manufactuer error so others reading these can have some input. But thanks for the feedback and we'll try to soften it up.

Thanks!
